Configuring Mac OS 8.5 or 9.x to Connect to the Internet

Important Notes

  • The process described below will only connect you to the Internet.

To set up an Internet connection using WAN Solutions dial-in facilities, you need to configure the TCP/IP and Remote Access control panels in your system folder.

  • To do this, use the following instructions:
    • Click on the Apple icon in the upper left of the screen.
    • Move your mouse pointer over "Control Panels". This will give you another menu. You can access the TCP/IP and Remote Access control panels from this menu.

The TCP/IP control panel should contain the following information and look like the example below:

  • "Connect via:" should be set to "PPP". (It can be selected from the pull-down menu.)
  • "Configure:" should be set to "Using PPP Server".
  • Type in the following next to "Name server addr.:" 216.150.224.2 and/or 216.150.224.3
  • Under "Search domains:" type in: webandnetworksolutions.com
  • Then click in the close box and allow the changes to be saved.

The Remote Access control panel should contain the following information and look like the example below, except that your logonid and password should be substituted:

  • "Registered User" should be checked.
  • Username: Use your username.
  • Password: Use your password.
  • Check "Save password" if no one else will be using your system and you don't want to have to put in the password each time you connect.
  • Next to "Number:" type in: your local dial-up number
If you are outside the Michigan area, you will need to type the proper area code for your dial-up number. If you have call waiting, you can turn it off when connecting, by typing: *70,999-9999
  • You click on the "Connect" button to start the connection process. Watch the Status area for messages. If the connection is successful, you can try out your Internet applications. (Your e-mail software will also need to be configured to point to your email account.)

Troubleshooting

  • If you get the error message, make sure your login information is correct. You might have specified an incorrect Username or Password (Note: Username and Password are case sensitive). Make sure your Username is correct by looking at the information above.
  • If you get timed out while dialing in, try again before you conclude that something is wrong.
  • Before you contact WAN Solutions Customer Support(1-800-963-3464), write down each error message you get exactly as it is displayed.
Now What?

After connecting to WAN Solutions Internet service, you will either see a dialog box that says you are connected (which you can minimize). You can then choose the Internet application you want to run.

Here are some of things you can do:

  • Browse the Internet

Double-click on the icon for your web browser, such as Netscape. After you have opened your web browser, type in the address (URL) or location of the web page you want to go to in the text field below the tool bar. For Netscape it is labeled "Location."

  • Access E-mail

There are several ways of accessing your e-mail. You can configure Netscape Messenger to access your e-mail. Instructions on how to configure various e-mail packages are available here.

You can access your e-mail via the Web at: http://webmail.wansol.net.

  • Click on "Disconnect" to drop your Internet connection when you're through.
