Configuring MacOS X to Connect to the Internet

Important Notes

  • The process described below will only connect you to the Internet.

To set up an Internet connection from a Macintosh OS X system using WAN Solutions dial-in facilities, you first need to configure the Network settings. To do so, go to the Apple menu (upper left corner of the screen) and select System Preferences. When the System Preferences panel opens up, click on the Network (globe) icon. You will need to put identification information for your WAN Solutions account into the TCP/IP and PPP tabs. If the default settings don’t work, you may also need to adjust settings in the Modem tab.

  • “Configure:” should be set to "Using PPP" (It can be selected from the pull-down menu).
  • The areas under “Domain Name Servers” and “Search Domains” can be left blank.
  • Then click on the Save button and allow the changes to be saved.
  • Next to “Service Provider:”, type “WAN Solutions”.
  • Next to “Account Name:”, put your username.
  • Next to "Password:" you type in password.
  • Only check "Save password" if no one else will be using your system and you don't want to have to put in the password each time you connect.
  • Next to "Number:" type in: your local dial-up number.

If you are outside the Michigan area, you will need to type the proper area code for your dial-up number. If you have call waiting, you can turn it off when connecting, by typing: *70,999-9999

  • Inside the Applications folder, you should find the Internet Connection application. Open it up and click on the "Connect" button to start the connection process. Watch the Status area for messages. If the connection is successful, you can try out your Internet applications.
Troubleshooting
  • If you get the error message, make sure your login information is correct. You might have specified an incorrect Username or Password (Note: Username and Password are case sensitive). Make sure your Username is correct by looking at the information above.
  • If you get timed out while dialing in, try again before you conclude that something is wrong.
  • Before you contact WAN Solutions Customer Support(1-800-963-3464), write down each error message you get exactly as it is displayed.
Now What?

After connecting to WAN Solutions Internet service, you will either see a dialog box that says you are connected (which you can minimize). You can then choose the Internet application you want to run.

Here are some of things you can do:

  • Browse the Internet

Double-click on the icon for your web browser, such as Netscape. After you have opened your web browser, type in the address (URL) or location of the web page you want to go to in the text field below the tool bar. For Netscape it is labeled "Location."

  • Access E-mail

There are several ways of accessing your e-mail. You can configure Netscape Messenger to access your e-mail. Instructions on how to configure various e-mail packages are available here.

You can access your e-mail via the Web at: http://webmail.wansol.net.

  • Click on "Disconnect" to drop your Internet connection when you're through.

If the modem has not dialed, or has dialed but not made a successful connection, you should check the configuration under the Modem tab of the Network System Preference. Look for the modem driver for your particular modem and select it. Then try again.
