Configuring Windows XP Home Edition to Connect to the Internet

Important Notes

The process described below will only connect you to the Internet.

In order to use your Internet connection, you must have the necessary software to either browse the Internet or to perform other Internet functions such as FTP or Telnet. Netscape or Internet Explorer will allow you to browse the web. Netscape Mail or Outlook/Outlook Express will let you access your e-mail. Windows XP provides "Telnet" and "FTP". To run either one, click on Start, select "Run," and type either telnet or ftp.

Creating Your New Connection

Click on Start, then Control Panel.

Troubleshooting
  • If you get the error message "Dial up Networking could not establish a compatible set of host protocols," make sure your login information is correct. You might have specified an incorrect Username or Password (Note: Username and Password are case sensitive). Make sure your Username is correct by looking at the information above. Also, check the network components listed in "Network" within Control Panel. There should be no more than one TCP/IP.
  • If you get timed out while dialing in, try again before you conclude that something is wrong.
  • Before you contact WAN Solutions Customer Support(1-800-963-3464), write down each error message you get exactly as it is displayed.
Now What?

After connecting to WAN Solutions Internet service, you will either see a dialog box that says you are connected (which you can minimize), or you will see two small, flashing computers on the right side of your Windows Task Bar. The computers on the Task Bar represent the "connected to" dialog box already minimized. You can then choose the Internet application you want to run.

Here are some of things you can do:

  • Browse the Internet

Double-click on the icon for your web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. (If you have Windows 95/98/NT you probably have Internet Explorer.) After you have opened your web browser, type in the address (URL) or location of the web page you want to go to in the text field below the tool bar. For Internet Explorer the text field is labeled "Address," and for Netscape it is labeled "Location."

  • Access E-mail

There are several ways of accessing your e-mail. You can configure Eudora Pro, Eudora Light, Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, or Netscape Messenger (to name a few e-mail packages) to access your e-mail. Instructions on how to configure various e-mail packages are available here.

You can access your e-mail via the Web at: http://webmail.wansol.net.

  • Click on "Disconnect" to drop your Internet connection when you're through.
